Cycling Aotearoa for Cure Kids

Nigel, one of our directors at Alchemy, and a group of friends from the University of Auckland Bioengineering Institute are developing technology to help monitor children with hydrocephalus, fluid build-up around the brain.

Cure Kids is kindly supporting their research and they questioned how they could “give back”.
In a mad rush of blood to the head, they decided to cycle the length of Aotearoa!!
They started the adventure with a warm up ride called Kopiko Aotearoa – East to West across the North Island of 900km over 7 days.

On Feb 28th they started the main event , Tour Aotearoa – a ride from Cape Reinga to Bluff! It was 25 days and nothing short of 3000 km , but the bodies and bikes held up well and they completed the Tour last night, what an effort!

Alchemy is a proud supporter of this great charity and want to congratulate Nigel and the team for their tenacity and for going the extra mile to raise funds for Cure Kids!

Although the ride is finished, there is still time to donate.

Donations can be made here.

Being a new parent is tough enough but imagine being told that your baby has an abnormal build-up of fluid around the brain (hydrocephalus) and that it’s going to require neurosurgery.

There is still no way of telling when life-threatening fluid build-up is causing a rise in brain pressure except for a brain scan in hospital. Treatment is available but with a 60% chance it will block and fail within the first 2 years.

Our goal is to improve the lives of children and adults with hydrocephalus. We are developing a tool for parents and caregivers which will allow them to monitor the pressure in the brain remotely via a sensor placed alongside the drainage tube, that can then be easily shared with health care professionals electronically.

It will reduce hospitalizations, radiation exposure from CT scans and the anxiety of parents around the care of their children.
